As I mentioned at the end of my previous post I had ordered some foam for the seat cushions ( from Foam Factory https://www.foambymail.com/ , they did a great job and the foam shipped quickly). I then went fabric shopping at the wonderful Zimman’s in Lynn who have been an institution for all kinds of decorating fabric since 1909 ( http://www.zimmans.com/ .) With expert advice from my lovely and talented wife, we got a lovely brown fabric that I think really goes nicely with the other colors in my office and with the chair.
I found some excellent and clear instructions on making box cushions ( that’s this type of cushion ) here on the internet ( How To Sew Box Cushions ) and this informed us on how much fabric we need as well as the zippers and thread required.
My saintly, beautiful and talented wife taught me what I needed to know to follow those instructions, including:
Creating and pinning a pattern
Cutting out a pattern with pinking shears
Setting up the sewing machine including threading, making a bobbin, adjusting and testing the tension
Pinning and sewing straight seams with the sewing machine
Zigzagging the seams to prevent unraveling
Inserting a zipper in one side, measuring, pinning, sewing using the zipper foot
I did all the actual construction labor and I have to say it felt great to learn a new skill and produce something that I really like the look and feel of.
Many of the same things that I like about wood working applied: precision, squareness, joints, fastening, planning to name a few.
The result is absolutely wonderful and I look forward to sewing something else in the not too distant future.
